BTL Staff Review

The Icon -5 carries a little more weight in the barrel and is a great fit for an older, stronger travel-ball hitter. We like it for gap and middle-of-the-order hitters who want to drive the baseball and prefer the smooth feel of a two-piece composite. It has plenty of pop and rewards a player who likes feeling some barrel through the zone.

BTL TipMost 13 year olds playing travel ball are on a -5. That is the right stepping stone before the jump to BBCOR. If your player is heading into 9th grade, get comfortable with the heavier drop now so the transition is not a shock.

Understanding Drop Weight
Drop weight is the difference between a bat's length in inches and its weight in ounces. A 32" bat with a -3 drop weighs 29 oz.

Who is the Icon -5 best for?

Strong travel-ball hitters who can control a heavier, slightly loaded swing while preparing for BBCOR.

Does the Icon feel flexible?

The Zero Loss Collar reinforces the connection to create a firmer response than many two-piece composite bats.

How demanding is the -5 model?

It requires more strength and barrel control than the -8 or -10 versions, particularly because of its Mid-Loaded profile.
